Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a phytochemical plant chemical discovered in 1940. It is a well-known alternative medicine ingredient, accounting for more than 40% of the market. It shares some similarities with THC however CBD doesn’t have the same euphoric effect as the latter; CBD works to block the inflammation response of specific immune cells which are known to trigger inflammation of certain tumors. But in contrast to what many consider to be the advantages of CBD but we must be aware that CBD is still a very powerful substance and can have toxic effects when excessive amounts is ingested.
Since the beginning of time it has been recognized that CBD can be used to replace alcohol in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The most recent breakthrough came from the lab of Michael J. Gerber at the University of Pittsburgh, where he and his colleagues published their findings in the Journal of Human Evolution. The Pittsburgh lab has recently been involved in the development of F.D.A. cannabidiol.
Gerber’s research revealed that “the most important factor in our success was identifying the compounds that give us the highest potency without any of the side effects that are common with CBD.” CBD was previously thought to be a psychoactive substance. It had little to no medical advantages. CBD isn’t an amino acid, but it is a phytochemical that originates from the endocannabinoids in hemp, cannabis and a few different species of plants. They function as a kind of natural antidepressant. Recent research at John Hopkins University has confirmed that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and could decrease seizures among children suffering from epilepsy that is uncontrolled.
However, while CBD is considered to be relatively safe, and is used with caution, there’s been little evidence to support the effects on health of CBD when used in conjunction with other drugs for healing. Many studies on CBD and its active constituents have been done on animals that were given CBD along with other medications. While there is not much information regarding CBD’s long-term toxic effects for humans, there is evidence that CBD could be harmful in certain situations.
Recent reports from the US House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Power suggest that CBD may have psychoactive effects. The committee was particularly interested in the effects of CBD on patients who were prescribed Dronabinone, an antiepileptic drug used to treat heroin addiction. The committee concluded that Dronabinol can be effective for reducing both the desire to experience a high and the desire to take the same dosage again to feel better. The report doesn’t specify if other medications are used in conjunction with CBD to treat the pain of narcotics.
It is not clear from the available evidence the extent to which CBD is as effective in relieving anxiety as an illicit drug like cannabis, or even as effective as psychostimulants like Ritalin. It is the fact that CBD is nearly identical in chemical composition with the active ingredient of cannabis (cannabis sativa), implies that CBD may have less of an impact on the user’s mental state than psychoactive drugs such as cannabis. However, there are no known adverse effects associated with CBD in humans. If CBD helps to ease chronic pain associated with anxiety or chronic seizures in animals (as some patients with epilepsy have been treated with CBD) It could have some serotonergic properties which can be of some benefit in relieving anxiety in humans without producing sedation. CBD does not appear to cause sedation. CBD does not appear have any serotonergic effects on humans.
Alongside the reported absence of any adverse side effects, there is evidence to suggest that CBD can be useful as a natural treatment for a variety of ailments such as migraine headaches, asthma, menstrual disorders, indigestion and menstrual cramps and is effective in the treatment of marijuana-related recreational use. But, CBD cannot currently be utilized by minors as it is not approved by the US government to be sold as a prescribed drug. In addition, although hemp is grown in the majority of the USA, CBD is most often found in the southern part of the country in states such as Texas, Oklahoma and Florida with rates of production varying according to the availability of industrial hemp. According to the hemp lobby, the federal government has yet not yet approved CBD cultivation as a form of medicine or medical use.
While CBD might not possess the same mind-altering effects as THC, it has been shown to reduce nausea in some instances, and evidence suggests that CBD could help in reducing anxiety and seizures. The only known health benefit of CBD as previously mentioned, is the reduction in appetite that alcohol withdrawal results in. Because CBD is usually consumed in the form of a smoke rather than as a tincture like THC and has less adverse negative effects than cannabis. CBD isn’t as psychoactive and mind-altering as cannabis, and therefore is considered to be less risky as compared to smoking cannabis. It is still being studied to discover the full health benefits of CBD as compared to cannabis.
